About Melissa
At the age of 6, Melissa’s passion for riding began with her first lesson at a fox hunting barn in Northern Virginia. Later, while visiting her uncle’s ranch in Wyoming as a preteen, she fell in love with the ranching lifestyle and started barrel racing. During high school and into college she worked at a ranch helping train horses for movies and cowboy mounted shooting. After graduating with her Bachelors in Public Relations, she worked as a 3rd shift Equine Vet Tech at one of the top equine hospitals, mostly handling hospitalized horses and emergency surgeries.
She then traveled heavily for cow horse trainers; show prepping everything from Open horses to Futurity colts. Being on the road for 9 weeks or more at a time hauling to Futurities, she learned that keeping these horses sound, sane and showing took determination, organization and loads of perseverance. Attention to detail was a necessity. For the past few years she managed a sale program for ranch and rope horses out of Arizona and is currently barrel racing and focusing on the Incentive races (Pink buckle, ruby Buckle, etc.) She feels these traits fit right at home as a Markel Specialist.
